Commercial Energy Storage

Ontario, an energy market like no other

The IESO’s Industrial Conservation Initiative creates a unique wholesale energy market, giving Ontario Class A customers an equal opportunity for massive headaches or enormous savings when it comes to their electricity bills.

For those looking to save on energy, our commercial energy storage systems (BESS) are one solution quickly growing in popularity amongst large manufacturing and industrial energy users. A proper commercial battery energy storage system can save you millions of dollars in annual global adjustment costs. These systems discharge electricity from the batteries in anticipation of the top five Ontario peak demand hours and reduce your Peak Demand Factor – ideally to zero. Rechargeables provides trusted, custom-designed systems to fit your consumption needs.

Our commercial energy storage systems include:

  • Industry-leading lithium battery technology
  • Weather-proof and heated enclosures to ensure sub-zero battery operation
  • Advanced software to effectively monitor and manage your system
  • Built-in fire suppression system for cost-effective fire safety

Why the focus on lithium-iron-phosphate (LFP) batteries?

Lithium-iron-phosphate (LFP) batteries are a newer technology than the previously dominant Lithium-ion technology. With production costs quickly falling and improved energy density, analysts predict that LFP will become the leading chemistry for grid batteries by 2030.
They offer:
  • superior chemical and thermal stability
  • low-to-no required active maintenance and an extended lifecycle
  • minimal self-discharge, meaning batteries can hold their charge for up to a year when not in use
  • full power delivery until depletion

Peak Shaving or GA busting
Batteries are charged from the grid during off-peak hours and programmed to discharge at periods of peak demand to reduce global adjustment charges. For Class A customers, in order to offset energy consumption this high, a battery will typically range in size from 500 kW to several MW.

There are several strategies to achieve maximum cost savings, but these are two of the most common:

Complete draw: During an assumed peak hour, the company stops drawing power from the grid completely and relies exclusively on their energy storage system.

Partial draw: Once provincial energy demand approaches the IESO’s daily peak threshold, the company begins to withdraw a portion of their energy needs from storage for a gradual discharge to ensure their Peak Demand Factor is fixed at a set rate.

Battery energy storage systems are well worth the upfront capital investment. Power Advisory calculates that the annual average savings for Class A customers are more than $500/kW, assuming businesses hit all 5 peak hours.

Emergency backup

With a battery energy storage system, you can secure operations and provide intermediate backup power in the event of a power failure.
Power outages are more than just an inconvenience to Ontario businesses – they can be detrimental. In a survey of 800 organizations, ITIC found that for enterprises with over 1,000 employees, the average cost of a single outage ranged from $100,000 to $300,000. This is bad news as, according to Eaton, Ontario saw the most outages in the country from 2015 to 2017 and is continuing to experience reliability issues.
